What do Miss America and Autism have in common? The answer is in the form of a brave 18 year-old woman from Montana by the name of Alexis Wineman.
Wineman, the current Miss Montana and the youngest competitor in this year’s pageant, is the first competitor to have a form of autism. When I first read this, I thought to myself, “We need more young people like her to represent our community on multiple platforms.” What better platform than Miss America? With Wineman entering the competition, it gives young girls who have autism hope and inspiration that would empower them to go for their dreams and aspirations.
Who knows? Autism may have a tiara and a sash come this Saturday. I’m rooting for Alexis Wineman, a decorated missing piece.
